Can Mindfulness Help with Overthinking

👤 Stella Wren 🕒 Reading Time: 8 min

I used to lie awake at 3 a.m. replaying a conversation from 2019. My brain was a hamster wheel, and the hamster was on espresso. So I asked the question everyone asks: can mindfulness help with overthinking?

Yes. But not the way I expected.

I thought meditation would flip a switch and turn my brain off. I was wrong. And honestly, I am glad I was.

Quick Mindfulness for Overthinking Today

If your mind won’t stop spinning, try these:

  1. Sit for 2 minutes and count your breaths, nothing else.
  2. Name your worry out loud, then say “this is a thought, not a fact.”
  3. Notice your feet on the floor — that is your anchor.
  4. Set a timer for one hour and decide not to revisit the topic until then.
  5. Label the thought as “planning” or “spinning,” then let it pass.

What Happens When You Meditate for Years and Your Mind Goes Quiet?

I have been meditating for a few years now, and it seems like meditation has turned off my mind and body. To give you a summary of what happened, it is like this: I really feel very lonely to a certain extent, and I feel like no one is like me. But I am sure that these things are because of meditation.

Wait, that sounds scary, right? Like I lost something?

I started meditating seven years ago, and after a wonderful period of time, I felt a lot of energy on the surface of my body. I saw colors more beautifully. My five senses were much stronger, and I understood the subtleties much more. It was beautiful. It really was.

Then something shifted.

After a while, I focused my attention on the flow of energy in my body and I felt it thicker. I continued to meditate according to this flow, and at the same time I paid attention to my thoughts. As time went on, they became weaker and weaker and seemed to separate from me, and I realized that they were not really there.

Here is the part nobody warns you about. As time went by, both negative and positive thoughts and all aspects of my mind began to turn off, and I also distanced myself from the outside day by day.

I was calm. But I was also gone.

Can Mindfulness Help with Overthinking, or Does It Just Make You Feel Weird?

Let me be honest with you. My feelings of sadness or depression have decreased, and even though I am alone, I feel sad or happy or excited, and I am in a stable state. That sounds amazing. And it is, mostly.

But there is a shadow side.

I think and imagine that my mind has become very small. It has become so small that it is very difficult to talk for a minute or read a page. And I feel that my awareness of my surroundings has decreased. I am in a strange state. My thoughts have become so small that I can no longer do simple activities.

Can you see the problem?

I wanted to stop overthinking. I did. But I accidentally stopped thinking altogether. The hamster wheel stopped. The hamster died. And then I was just sitting there in the dark with no hamster.

Does that mean mindfulness is bad? No. It means I did it wrong.

Why Mindfulness for Overthinking Is Not About Emptying Your Head

Here is what I learned the hard way. Mindfulness was never supposed to be a vacuum for your thoughts. It is a window.

You do not need to get rid of thoughts. You need to see them.

Someone once described it this way: you’re used to reading, thinking, performing from the illusionary “me.” The “me” experience captures a lot of thinking, and the illusion that you are effortfully doing something. Being aware of what is beneath that leans closer to the truth.

What does that mean for an overthinker?

It means the goal is not silence. The goal is distance.

When you overthink, you are in the thought. You are swimming in it. Mindfulness does not drain the pool. It hands you a raft.

A Simple Method for Overthinking

Here is a simple practice that helped me stop drowning in my own mind.

StepWhat You DoWhy It Works
1Notice the thoughtYou cannot distance from what you cannot see
2Label it “thinking”This separates you from the content
3Ask: “Is this helpful right now?”Most overthinking is not problem-solving, it is spinning
4Return to your breathYour breath is always in the present
5Do one tiny actionAction breaks the loop better than willpower

I use this when I catch myself drafting angry emails in my head at 2 a.m. It does not make the thoughts stop. It makes them matter less.

What About the Loneliness That Comes with a Quiet Mind?

Nobody talks about this. Can mindfulness help with overthinking? Yes. But it can also make you feel like you are the only person on your wavelength.

I really feel very lonely to a certain extent, and I feel like no one is like me. I felt this hard. When your mind goes quiet, the people around you are still loud. You see the spinning in others because you remember your own spin.

Someone once said: your mind is not small. It is now sitting there waiting for instructions. You need to take the meditative states you experience on the cushion out into the social realm.

That hit me. I had been meditating to escape. I should have been meditating to show up.

How to Practice Mindfulness for Overthinking Without Going Too Far

If I could go back and talk to myself at year two of meditation, here is what I would say.

Do not meditate to turn off your mind. Meditate to understand it.

One person warned that there’s a type of meditation called metta where you focus on self-love and loving others. What you probably did was focus meditation. If you only do focus meditation, you may slowly lose your mind.

That was me. I was so focused on breath that I forgot to focus on living.

Here is what I do now instead:

  • I meditate for 10 minutes, not 2 hours
  • I practice loving kindness meditation, not just focused attention
  • I take my mindfulness into conversations, not just into silence
  • I ask myself: “Am I present, or am I just quiet?”

What to Do When Mindfulness Makes You Feel Worse

Some days the overthinking is worse after meditation. That is normal. It is like opening a closet that was stuffed full. It looks messier before it looks cleaner.

A lot of people are practicing dissociation, not meditation. Ouch. But true.

If you feel numb, disconnected, or like you cannot function, slow down. Meditation is not a race. It is not a trophy.

The Balance Nobody Talks About

Can mindfulness help with overthinking? Yes. But it is not a cure. It is a lens.

You still need to think. You still need to plan. You still need to care about outcomes. Mindfulness just stops you from being dragged around by every thought that shows up.

One person said that they find themselves being more curious with questions, rather than having answers. That is the sweet spot. Curiosity, not control.

FAQ

Q: Can mindfulness help with overthinking at night?

A: Many people find that a 5-minute body scan before bed helps. You are not trying to stop thoughts. You are trying to notice them without following them. Some nights it works. Some nights you just lie there. Both are okay.

Q: How long does it take for mindfulness to reduce overthinking?

A: Some people notice a shift in a few weeks. Others take months. It depends on consistency, not intensity. Five minutes daily beats one hour weekly.

Q: Can mindfulness make overthinking worse?

A: Sometimes yes, at first. When you start noticing your thoughts, you see how many there are. That can feel overwhelming. Stick with it, but go slowly. If you feel worse for more than a few weeks, consider talking to a professional.

Q: What is the difference between mindfulness and meditation?

A: Meditation is the practice. Mindfulness is the skill. You meditate to build mindfulness. Then you use mindfulness during your day, like when you catch yourself overthinking in a meeting.

Q: How do I know if I’m meditating or just dissociating?

A: Dissociation feels numb and disconnected. You feel like you’re floating away from your life. Mindfulness feels present and aware. You notice your thoughts, but you’re still connected to your body and surroundings. If you feel more detached, try loving-kindness meditation or walking meditation to stay grounded.

One Last Thing

I still meditate. I still have quiet days. But I am no longer trying to turn off my mind. I am trying to live with it.

When I feel that loneliness, I remember what one person told me: you are not broken. You are just early. There are others on this path. You are not the only one asking if mindfulness can help with overthinking.

It can. But you do not have to disappear to find peace.
